Windows Media Player problem in Vista
By: rekha singh | 07 May 2010 5:57 pm
I am trying to install WMP 11, I am running Vista. I have tried for the last month and I keep getting the error"There is a newer version of Windows Media Player[11.0. 6002.18005] already installed on your computer. It is not possible to use an older installation package[11.0. 5721.5146] to install files or to repair your current version of the Player." I have tried every fix I could find on the internet, I have deleted every WMP file I could find, in the registry and else where. This copy of Vista is Home Basic, I installed it over windows Xp. It is updated with all available updates. I also have a problem with Windows freezing with the open with box, I had concluded that it might be something with this WMP problem and codecs. I just don't know what else to try. HELP!!!!!!!! ! CommentsWhy are you trying to install WMP on a Vista system that comes with it anyway. It is telling you you that you already have it.
You have probably mucked up the register now and it just freezes up.
I suggest you run your Vista CD and the repair function.

Go to Control Panel/Folder Options, file types tab. Scroll down to the file type in question, and you can change it there.I have found it is also very easy to just delete the file type in question, then using either explorer or my computer, go to to a file type you want to change (or insert a cd or dvd), it will then prompt you for the correct program to use. Pick windows media player and make sure you put a check mark for it to remember this the next time. If you want to test and make sure media player will actually play the file, leave the check mark off and it will ask you again the next time, then you can have it remember.

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2. I have Windows Media Player ver 11 on three computers. On one of them it works just fine. On the other two it opens an .avi file but I only get sound and curvy waves where the video should be. No video.
Any one know the problem please? Do I need a video codec and if so which one?
Thanks
