Sp3-HP-AMD

By: | 10 Sep 2008 10:39 pm

I was brought another HP with an AMD processor that did the continual reboot without completely loading to desktop even in Safe Mode.

I booted with a XP CD and tried to do a chkdsk /r/f but only the partition with miniwinnt and i386 were present.

I took the hard drive out and placed into another pc and did the scandisk, which did find and repair alot of problems. I put it back into the PC and booted to safe mode and uninstalled SP3, it then booted normally. I updated his Norton 360 and ran the HP AMD fix utility, rebooted and proceeded to do the SP3 update again. It got thru about 95% and then gave an error that it could not complete and aborted. From that point on SP3 did not show in the MS update list again. I did all the other critical updates.
Looks like the HP/AMD thing with SP3 still is not fixed yet.

I used the tool from:

http://msinfluentia ls.com/blogs/ jesper/archive/ 2008/05/08/ does-your- amd-based- computer- boot-after- installing- xp-sp3.aspx

and it still failed about 95% of the way thru, but it did at least abort
on it's own without harm.

This PC also would not boot to safe mode. It could be that the owner
did a improper shut down at the wrong time while trying to fix it
himself.
