Problem with HP printer
By: rekha singh | 09 Feb 2010 8:21 pm
I have a 4050 HP printer and all of a sudden, when trying to print a solid block of black on a piece of paper, some of the black is now grey/white -why would that be please ? CommentsDid you run a clean. How old is the printer. Did you know that ink cartridges are not al;ways foolproof and can give trouble because the jets get blocked.

Did you run a clean. Nope, not sure how I would do that ? How old is the printer. About 10 years old, but these ones do go round the clock a few times.

I use an Epson and if I get a malfunctioning cartridge I take it back and they give me a replacement.

As far as the problem with the old HP printer, it needs an extensive cleaning. I don't mean the program included one but a complete cleaning. In an HP a lot of sludge builds up that is excess scrapings that build up on the right side of the carriage. Beware it is a messy job. I took mine in the garage to do it and used a lot of alcohol on large q-tips. Also had to use a small scrapper to get all the sludge our. I think the first time I had your problem I had used the printer about 6 or so years. A complete cleaning did the trick. I got the cleaning instructions from an HP web site. After the first time I started doing it every two years or so. You're gonna be surprised how much thick black sludge has built up and some of it is hard to get at. Good Luck!

That is why I would never buy an HP printer . Epson's to not suffer like that.

I go to people houses to teach them how to use a computer. I have seen loads of and used an HP and none come up to my Epson for durability, low cost of ink and the quality of the print out.

And exactly why I buy nothing but HP printers is they are extremely dependable and long lasting if you take care of them. Plus they give "excellent" results on photo printing, like non other. The one el cheapo I got for my new system does a wonderful job and the older one is still working (8 years) away downstairs which I still prefer for doing photos. I haven't seen any others that compare and so does my family whom I share photos with. In fact they send me their photos for printing. Over time all printers need a thorough cleaning no matter what the brand.

Any ideas where that sludge would be on an HP 4050 please ?

In my HP 820Cse the sludge collects under the position at the far right where the print head sits when not printing. I assume the sludge is a result of the ink slowly draining from the print cartridge when it is sitting idle because the print head points down. I would look in the similar position for your printer.

Hi,

I have the DX 7540 All-in-One with printer copier and scanner. It has five cartridges that cost me £5 each or £21 for the five.

On mine the sludge formed in the lower cradle on the left side. To make it easy to access there was a procedure of opening the lid so the the cartridges would move from the left to the center and then powering off the unit. That would expose the cradle where the cartridges sit and the sludge formation would be. After time the sludge build up, hardens and prevents the printer heads from properly aligning thus improper printing. I've no idea about a HP 4050. Of course I've been talking about ink jet printers and not sure if yours is an ink jet or is it a laser? Laser's may not have an ink sludge problem. Ink jet's use toner instead of cartridges? Not sure, never had one. Anyway the above info should shed some light on what could possibly be your problem.
