Printing Problem
By: Admin | 09 Mar 2010 11:24 am
Today I have changed all the ink in my printer because I had trouble in printing out a web page from Virgin Atlantic. I am still have this problem in that it only prints out half of the page. I have printed out a letter from My Documents with no problems. Is there a problem with printing out web pages generally or do I need to do something to adjust things. I have printed out loads of web pages with no problems in the past. Comments
Normally there is a "Print this" on a page that you may need to print, say
for a ticket. But if your just wanting to print a page that you open on the
web it is best to first Select that portion of the page you want to print
and use the File/Print dialog to choose Print Selection.

On the print menu of internet explorer (normal part of the dropdown print
menu or under File/page setup of the menu bar), click page setup and click
the 'Print Background Colours and Images' this should allow printing of the
full page rather than a partial print. Don't forget to turn it off after as
you may not want to print full pages.
I also find it useful to prevent wasting paper to print pages as PDF first.
Then only print the required page/s.

OK. I haven't explained myself properly. It is my eticket with Virgin which has been sent as an email. I am not using Windows mail but am using my email on my server but of course it is still in my browser. Since I last wrote to you all I have had a friend try it but he gets the same result in that it only prints half of the first page.

If you mean you are trying to print an attached ticket then its your printer settings. If it a web page then its HTML and that needs to be opened to print it as a whole.

Yes I open the email message up so that it is full view by double clicking it or right click and open. However both my friend and I get the same result that it prints the first half page out of 8 pages.

If a web page is acting up when trying to print directly (and web pages can be quirky), I usually select the text on the page and copy and paste it into Word. Using 'Paste special....' rather than Paste (and choosing HTML layout in Paste special) sometimes helps to keep the original formatting as close as possible to the web page, though graphics can still get a bit messed up

I print a lot of webpages daily and what I typically do using IE8 is highlight the text I want to print, then off the toolbar,
select print preview off the Printer Menu. There are several options in there including zooming, selecting "as selected on screen",
landscape mode, margins etc. Then when it looks right you can click on the printer icon. You can also see the individual pages in
the Print Previews so you can select which pages to print in the printer dialog.
A lot of webpages that have "Print" links will invoke the default print driver dialog. Some websites like FedEx for example have
links that generate "Printer Friendly pages" In either case you can cancel the default print driver dialog that may popup and go to
the Print Preview page.
Using FedEx as an example, it is best to select The printer Friendly version as opposed to just attempting to print the page. I
believe the reason for this is that the tracking webpage needs to query a database to display the content. Only the Webpage has the
rights to do that. The printer driver doesn't have the permissions to query the database and generate a print job. Print drivers
have to read the html code of the page to generate the print job.
Another factor that may hinder being able to print absolutely every webpage is that many webpages contain references to scripts that
reside on the website server and not locally. So in addition to permissions, there are issues with absolute and relative paths. A
webpage html code may reference a script like http://www.website. com/process. cgi or ../cgi/process. cgi. The first example anyone
could access but the second references a path in relation to the "physical" webpage location on the web server. The first example is
an 'absolute" path and the second is a "relative" path.
Even if you don't understand all this technical stuff, if you are having problems like this on a certain website, try printing from
another website and see if the problem persists. That should help you decide whether it is a problem with the website or the printer
driver.
And in worst-case scenarios, you can always use the print screen key and paste the view into a document and print it or save it for
reference.

Are you therefore going into the BT mail on line. That's Yahoo Mail

I tried that but that toolbar doesn't even print anything just prints "page 1" at the top and something else right at the very bottom of the page. This is very strange. It is especially strange since it happens also with a friend's son of mine who is pretty clued up with computers. Not an engineer however. I did a black and white version when my printer was connected to my old PC so that will have to do but I wanted to get a full color copy if possible. Then I still have to try and get a boarding card printed out just before the day but I guess they will have to give me that at the airport.

Well as you know my screen went and that meant I couldn't view any emails. I decided that it was better to use the facility to do my emails on the servers website.
However, in view of your last message I downloaded all mail to Windows Mail and the eticket has printed out OK.
I'm just wondering what will happen when I try to print my boarding pass as that will have to be done online of course.
Thanks everyone for all the help with it.

I also have printed on line mail via the Yahoo Print option but each time it means that you have to adjust the print option in your Printers dialog because you may have previously set it to print B & W or it will print all pages when you need to change to Selection Only. I agree about the web page content being fed from other parts of the Web server and that is why a Frindly Print Version is offered on the web pages where forms are required etc. On the webs I build I always offer friendly
