Import/Export contacts in Windows Live Messenger

By: rekha singh | 14 May 2010 4:09 pm

This HAS to be something obvious. I've just installed Windows Live messenger and gone to import contacts but it's not there. It should under contacts in the drop down menu at the top. Sorting contacts isn't there either. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, and I've searched the options but I cannot find anything that could possibly turn import/export contacts on or off. Can anyone shed any light?

If you Bing "import contacts Microsoft Live Messenger" without the quotes you will find several sites that discuss this.

When you are logged in on Win Live you have a top panel with you Picture Logo and below that panel are three small icones with drop arrows. Click the for right drop arrow and you get a menu with Contacts and that gives you all the options.

Yes, that's where they are every other time I've installed WLM, except not  this time. The two options to export and import are not there!

By: rekha singh | 14 May 2010

Mine only has the Import and it will not have an Export line because you just installed it and do not have contacts to export. And If you have not previously exported them to a file you will not be able to import them. In
that situation you just have to search for then once again via the Hotmail search. In that case its the first icon there and in the drop arrow menu you see search for people.

I suggest you uninstall again and reinstall WLM if non of these option show.

Done that - no difference. You can import contacts even if you've never saved them as I have done it when importing contacts from another ID before. There is no option to save contacts and no option to import contacts! It's very weird!

By: rekha singh | 14 May 2010

That is not possible, if I hit Import Contacts it just takes you to the file system where it looks for the .ctt file which is the WLM format. The icon on WLM is called Show Menu if you dwell a mouse over it after log in.

It has in its drop menu "save instant messaging contacts" and Import instant messaging contacts".

If you do not have these re-install the program as I suggested before.

Have you actually registered with MSN for this program ? Can you log in ?

1st click on contacts on left navigation panel then click on file menu if u see or just press alt+f to highlight file menu on menu bar, then select import/export and complete the wizard for the same.

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled. I'm either missing something really obvious or looking in the wrong place. The options for "save instant messaging contacts" and "import instant messaging contacts" which are on every other instance of WLM I've ever installed are not there!

Then its not installed correctly because it is there on my three computer where I installed it and one every one I teach at their home address. Sorry  to hammer it home but that is how it works.

Manage your contacts
To help you keep your contact list (Your contact list is where you keep information about people who are in your network on Windows Live or on your Windows Live Messenger list, such as their name, e-mail address, and phone number. When people share their details with you, you automatically get updated contact information from them. ) organized, you can import your contacts from other e-mail accounts, and merge or clean up duplicate contacts. When you create or import a name or e-mail address that contains
the same or similar information as an existing contact, Windows Live prompts you to merge the contact with an existing contact or to add it as a new contact.
To use your contact list in other programs, you can export your contacts to a file that can be edited in a spreadsheet or a program that does mail-merges, such as Microsoft Office Word. You can then open the file in any text editor or word-processing program, or import it into a spreadsheet or into your e-mail program.
Merge duplicate contacts
Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID ( The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID. ) , and then click People.
Select the check boxes next to the contacts that are for the same person.
At the top of the page, click Manage.
Click Merge.
Check and, if necessary, edit the contact details.
Click Save.

Clean up duplicate contacts
You may have people more than once in your contact list with different
contact information. To tidy them up, do the following:
Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID ( The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID. ) , and then
click People.
At the top of the page, click Manage.
Click Clean up contacts.
Click Clean up duplicate contacts.
If you have duplicate contacts, they are listed with the number of matches found. Contacts that contain the same information are identified as Exact matches. Contacts that contain similar information, such as the same e-mail address or the same name are identified as Similar matches.
From the list, select a name.
To delete a duplicate contact, check the box next to it, and then click
Delete.
–or–
To merge the information of duplicate contacts, click Merge.
Click Save.
Repeat these steps for each name on the list.

Import contacts from another e-mail program or service
Before you can import your contacts into Windows Live, you must first export them to a file from your other e-mail program or service. See the Help documentation for your other e-mail program or service for more information.
Click Import.
Under Option 2: Import from a file, select the e-mail program or service
that you want to import your contacts from.
To find the file that you want to import, click Browse.
Locate the file, and then click Open.
Click Import contacts.

Export contacts to a CSV file
Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID ( The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID. ) , and then
click People.
At the top of the page, click Manage.
Click Export, and then click Export contacts.
Click Save.
Select the location where you want to save the file on your computer, and then click Save.
Your contacts are downloaded into a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file, in which the comma character (,) separates each field of text. To edit or use them, import the saved file into a spreadsheet, e-mail program, or word
processing document.

I second that - WLM 2009 installed onto Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - fresh install. No option to import or export contacts in any of the available menus. Even tried to run as administrator and to run in compatibility mode with XP and Vista. No luck there. Hope someone finds an answer.

There are many discussions on the web about this.  If you are willing to do so, then you could install the older 14.0.8089 version by getting it from

That filehippo link won\'t work. You will have to download the older offline version included in wlsetup-all.exe Good luck finding it because MS deleted the older version from their servers already.

This is happening to me as well. I'm not new to messenger programs, esp. Windows Live/MSN. when you click contacts, the options simply are not there. It seems Microsoft removed them. I tried several reinstalls - no luck. Don't worry over the person who says that's how its done and they are sorry to hammer it home - They obviously haven't tried updating it from the Microsoft site recently.

If you don\'t have the option in the Contacts Menu in the Main Messenger Window I am assuming that is either going away now because of the new version that is in Beta, there is a problem with the services because of the new Beta, or because of some incompatibility with being able to manage the contacts thru your Account Online with Windows Live Services. Follow rekha singh | 14 May 2010 post on Exporting Contacts it works.

Export contacts to a CSV file

click People.
At the top of the page, click Manage.
Click Export, and then click Export contacts.

hi

By: | 04 Aug 2010

I think people who are suggesting solutions are using older version of WLM because in the latest version, you cant import or export contacts in new WLM. or may be there is need of another program to be installed for that purpose.....

hi all... only and before BUILD 14.0.8089.726 the option to export contact list appears and work... in the new builds dont exist this option. sorry for my poor english

Hello everyone,

Several of these users are correct, as of today, the most recent build of Windows Live Messenger (14.0.8117...) does not have the "Import Contacts" option available.  If you wish to install the previous version, below is a link to a safe copy that I've used for my computers:

http://www.9down.com/Windows-Live-Messenger-9-build-14-0-8089-726-199992/

Hopefully, Microsoft will address this oversight and add our import/export options back.

Hope this helps someone!

the problem is Windos Live Mail actually, when you install that crap, it erases the option to import/export contact from your Windows Live Messenger so you have to access your msn accounts (i have 4) using WLMail.

you can import/export contacts lists for 'live' services using the wizard at homail.com, just login with your live id and under your contacts section all the options are there

By: | 22 Mar 2011

 I've jsut started using Windows Live Mail on my new notebook, and, although the options to import and export are there, it does not work.  I have exported my contacts to a CSV file, saved it, clicked the import button and selected the required choices.  Then I click 'finish', a dialogue box appears saying 'import in progress' - but it isn't.  Nothing at all is imported, although I have selected the fields as appropriate.;

I had the exactly same problem when i tried to add my old list of contacts to my new  MSN account.

Do the following:

on your new account,  on the hotmail site, cllick import contacts on Options>Mail>Contacts>Import Contacts.

now select import from another Windows live account. Follow the steps.

your contacts are now on Hotmail, but not on windows live messenger.

Do the following: In the same contacts menu in Hotmail options, click Import contacs again. Now click "select from your contact list"

Then click select all.

Hotmail will now send invites to all your contacts, so you can chat with thm on MSN

thanks a lot buddy, it works although the captcha and other msn security blocked me after some 30 odd imports have 300+ accounts on my msn which is genuine and not spam or virus, will retry daily, still better to have auto import than add manually 300+ msn account in your list
