Help with Email problem.
By: rekha singh | 29 Mar 2010 12:53 pm
My client has over 2000 emails in Vista's Windows Mail. They are no longer on ther server. The computer is going to be reformatted with Windows XP, and using Outlook Express. How do I convert the Vista Mail emails to Outlook Express?
CommentsVista mail has an Export in the menus and OE has an import the same.

This obviously can't be done in the usual automated way. The successful workaround I keep seeing on forums is a variation of the following:
"Moving Windows Mail into Outlook Express
1. On the Vista computer, create a New Folder on the Desktop.
2. Open Windows Mail and position the window and New Folder so that you can see both.
3. Select the e-mail messages you want to go to Outlook Express, and drag them to the New Folder.
4. Put the new Folder onto removable media.
5. Attach the removable media to the XP computer.
6. Open Outlook Express and position the window and New Folder so that you can see both.
7. Open the New Folder and Select All.
8. Drag the selected messages into the list of messages for the Inbox or desired folder in Outlook Express (just make sure that the target folder is open).
9. Delete the New Folder from both computers and the removable media."

You said "Vista mail has an Export in the menus and OE has an import the same". Of course they do but how does this help brytonboy when it's impossible to import Windows Mails (.emls) from Vista into Outlook Express (.dbx) in XP in the way you're suggesting? That's why he's looking for a solution.
You can only use the export and import functions 'from' Outlook Express 'to' Windows Mail - not the other way around.

Since it's going in a backwards direction, I would setup a free email address somewhere and forward all the windows mail stuff to that account....then pick up the emails from the Outlook Express machine. Could possibly take forever though.
Outlook Express does not know about Windows Mail so it would be impossible to import Windows Mail messages.

I have Mail and OE and they can both export and import.

Copy/Save the .EML files to a storage device(CD/DVD/ USB drive).
Then after the XP's installed, Drag and Drop them into an OE folder(s).
Don't try to Copy and Paste into OE.
