Having trouble with Windows XP

By: rekha singh | 02 Aug 2010 1:16 pm

I shut down my computer like normal the other day and when i tried to turn it back on its getting stuck at the Windows XP black screen

before it gets to the point where you can log into an account. I can get in under the safe mode but thats it. I've tried running my anti
virus and spyware from there and that didnt fix the problem. Can someone please help me. Someone built this computer for me so I have nobody to go to with trouble. I am in online college courses and need this working ASAP.

Thanks,

Hi:

First you would try to do an XP System Restore back to a calendar date from before you had the problem,

If your PC is a HP or Compaq with an AMD processor, boot into safe mode and Uninstall SP-3 (Add/Remove Programs). If that doesn't fix it, then from Safe Mode go to My Computer and rightclick on the C drive and

choose tools, Error Checking and "Check Now" then put a check mark in the "Auto fix file system errors". Then reboot and see if that fixes it.

If not go back into safe mode and click on Start/Run and type in msconfig and uncheck "load start items", Apply and restart. If this  works then something loading at startup is causing the problem.

 C:/ Hard drive maybe failing.

IME this is typical behavior before it dies entirely.
Hope that you have backed up your system.
Good luck.
