Computer Problems

By: rekha singh | 09 Feb 2010 1:57 pm

My computer is shop made so I have no computer name as such. It is an Intel (R) GMA driver, .99 gb, 2.99 GHZ, Windows XP Home Edition.

I have a Zoom modem, Linksys router, AVG virus protection, Zone Alarm firewall. There are 133 gb of free space available yet.

My problem started about a week ago. When I was on Messenger with my daughter my connection to the internet would go off and on but would always come back on its own. When I played games on Pogo, it would freeze up and I'd have to go out and come back in to resume then it would do it again and again. When I go to a website, a lot of the time it would tell me I wasn't connected. Someone suggested trying Firefox instead of Internet Explorer so I have downloaded that now but it hasn't helped. I get no error codes when this happens.

I have contacted my server and everything there seems to be ok.

I have had multiple problems with this computer since I bought it...Had it back to the shop probably 6 times in the first month. Could these problems be just the computer and I need a new one or something else?

If I haven't given you enough information, please ask. I am not real computer savvy but am learning. RJ

You seem to have a modem connected to a router. I think you would be better off with a Router with built in modem or are you on a cable service.

You may need to look at the zone settings in the Zone Alarm because it may be cutting you off. Try shutting it down to see if things improve, switching it back on later.

Your computer is, I take it. working in every other way so I would suspect that it is just interruptions in the connection to the web.

What were the problem that made you take it back so many times, it may give some clue to what is wrong.

Thanks....I didn't know there was such a thing as a Router with a built in modem. I will look for that. Yesterday I unhooked the modem and the router, plugged back in and things seemed to be working better so I think you're right about it being that. I'm on DSL thru my phone company for my
internet.

I don't even remember what was wrong with it every time now....One time I do remember is I shut it down without doing it properly (it was storming) and he told me that's what caused it to not start up again. The last time I took it in he said I had a virus and it was because I had AVG on it and it wasn't a good virus protection. He said it would be around $300 to get rid of it. I knew that wasn't right so I took it to another guy and he fixed it (no virus) for around $100. I think the first guy was one of those who take advantage of dumb older women...lol Or thought he could.

Will look into this Route with built in modem...Can you recommend any particular brand that would be good? And are they very hard to hook up?

If you do a Google for a wireless router and good choice would be a Netgear or Dlink.

Yes you should shut down via the Start button every time.

Could I also suggest if you need a free virus program www.avast.com have a good free one. You need to register to use it each year but it is much better than ANG in my view.

thank you, I will look for a Netgear wireless router.

Yes I know I should use the Start button to shut down every time but when its cracking and popping outside, I panic and just pull the plug...well try to be better about that...lol

I am very happy with my AVG free program but thanks for the suggestion.
Will keep it in mind if I ever have a problem with AVG.

You may be happy with AVG but as I said Avast is free and will not interfere with what you do on the computer like AVG does.

I do a fairly large volume of virus removals myself. What I see are so many different combinations of security software on systems that the system shouldn't even be running in the first place. What it points out though, is there is no known security software or combination of security softwares that can provide 100% protection.

They are all incapable of preventing "stupid".

I have never gotton a virus from a clients hard drive by hanging it off my system like you are reporting. That is possibly because I do no more than look in my computer to see it listed. Then I scan the drive before I try to view the contents. I do this primarily if I am planning on doing data recovery but doubles as a virus removal technique.

Another option I use frequently is to boot an infected system with a BartPE disc or UBCD disk that has AV plugins installed. Some plugins load the registry also. Then after booting back to the actual hard drive, re-scan for a final cleanup.

Regardless though, there is no reason you should endup getting malware from a clients hard drive if it's handled with the proper caution.

've been looking for someone who's been using MSE regularly. I wouldn't mind using it as well on clients' computers because I keep running into problems with AVG (no, I won't change to Avast Ian) every  time there's an upgrade to a newer version. Very often, even after I've warned people about it, they'll install the new version with the standard settings instead of custom (so with a daily scan). On older computers a daily scan can be deadly. I was just looking at somebody's Pentium 3. It had Sims 2 on it with all the accessories and they'd upgraded to AVG 9.0 leaving the daily scan on. It naturally spent hours every day scanning thousands of Sims 2 files. I looked in the logbook - 5 to 6 hours scanning 'every' day - weep. The computer slowed to treacle-like speed while it was scanning, but you hardly see the icon working away down in the bottom right corner. They'd been cursing the computer for a long time for no reason (for anyone else - just remove the checkmark for daily scanning). You can get away with that with a dual core processor but not on an older Pentium 3.

I've tried MSE out on a few computers and I was very impressed with the user-friendliness and simplicity of the program but I'm still doubting. What I wanted to ask basically was - can you combine it with other programs like
Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware with no problem? It's obvious that you can't have any other pure antivirus program on there but I did read on the Microsoft site that you can't have 'any' other antivirus or anti-spyware  product on the computer. Or is this only referring to the paid versions of these programs which have real-time scanning and may conflict with MSE?

I ask because I've always used AVG in combination with Malwarebytes or SuperAntispyware. I find with infections that what one of them misses, the others will pick up. I prefer not having to depend 100% only on one program.

But also with a really serious infection, I have in the past occasionally had to use specific removal tools like SmitFraudFix, SmitRem, Combofix, Trojan Vundo, Trojan Remover, Rogue remover etc. depending on the type of
virus. Do you think you can still use these with MSE installed?

What are your own experiences combining MSE with other products? Or anyone else who's using Microsoft Security Essentials? I'm curious.

I believe as long as the other programs are installed after MSE, and they are not running resident all the time in the background, there will be no problem. I too use Malwarebytes to double check PC's IF I think I may have cleaned the PC of a bug and just want to make sure.

The reason I say AFTER MSE is installed, MSE may give an error if another product is found when installing.

The PC I mention is for one purpose only, to attempt to save a persons personal data BEFORE I clean and repair the PC, then make sure the personal data is clean before placing back on the repaired PC. Doing so has in the past infected this PC in the process.

And when it has acquired an infection, it has made it past F-Secure Security Package, Norton, Mcafee, Avast and AVG. So far (knock on wood) MSE has caught them everytime. And I'm holding my breath.

Personal data from home users is never very large and I save that to large memory pen or a larger external USB HD. It easy to scan the pen of ex HD without impregnating a computer because computer have other places that can be attacked as well as the HD.

By: rekha singh | 09 Feb 2010

That is my first choice as well, IF the PC will boot and the USB ports have not been disabled by the virus.

At times I also have a trojan/virus that cannot be cleaned while booted in to its own operating system. In those cases it has been successful to attach to my repair PC by either USB or as a second drive and let my system scan the drive. When I have to resort to this proceedure, I always try and turn off System restore before removing from the infected PC, so as not to reinfect itself when returned to its own system.

Attaching thier hard drive to my repair PC is only one tool in my arsenal of proceedures in attempting a repair on a customers PC, either because it will not boot or an attempt under certain circumstances to remove and infection.

I have used Spywareblaster, Spybot S&D, IOBIT 360 (shorter time) and a variety of other programs and my AV scanners have consisted of AVG, Avast, Avira and some others (separate times of course). I also have installed MBAM and SAS (I don't run SAS resident though).

I now only use MSE but had both MBAM and SAS installed when I installed MSE. I KEEP MBAM and SAS as "spare tires" just in case something happens that beats any MSE update and further action is required.

I have used MSE since Oct. 1, 2009 and nary a problem. It does pickup a problem with Unlocker but not one that concerns me after I did some research. I like unlocker so the problem is not worth not having the program.

There was not a lot of fanfare re MSE but because some of us belong to so many computer help forums etc we keep up to date on malware cleaners which the general user fails to do.

Every day in PC Tech in PalTalk, we convert many many people to MSE. The room is one of a few that offers pc tech help 24/7 365 all for free. Admins there and users are from all over the world. Just had a chap the other night in the room from Siberia.

Some programs raising an alert when MSE is installed. The key is to do a proper install of anything that is running resident or if it is not resident and you wish to uninstall it, make sure it is a complete uninstall. For this purpose use the programs uninstaller if it is a special one such as McAffee or Norton or else use a program called Revo Uninstaller.

Where you can have problems, is if there are remnants of programs left on the system. We are currently dealing with such an issue this AM in PC Tech.

I have just installed MSE on my laptop to give it a trial but will keep using my Panda protection on my other computers because at first run MSE does not appear to have the level of protection that Pandasoftware Global gives me and of course lacks the very good firewall included with Panda.

By: rekha singh | 09 Feb 2010

If you have XP or later, you have a Firewall built into the o/s. some get concerned about one way with XP but I don't and have had no difficulty with it in 6 years of usage. If you have Vista or W7 there is a two way firewall built in. If you have firewall concerns, it is easy to add a Router.

By: rekha singh | 09 Feb 2010

The firewall in XP , Vista or win 7 all turned off because they are not half as good as the protection in Panda firewall.

I have a router because BT supplies one and I have had one for years before BT but no one should rely on the hardware firewall in a router alone and should always have a good software one.

Back on line (my internet provider was down for the day, he is still having phone problems as well but has us back on line though) the PC repair guy did not find a corrupt hard drive so do not know what corrupted the Kasparsky anti virus on the PC. I had it cranked up to the top level but that did not help in this case.

Syncing my files on the Laptop right now with my external hard drive and will transfer the files over after and work on finding the transfer wizard as I could not use the help function to find it.

Will tackle that tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help.

Do you have any recommendations for a wireless router with built in modem? I don't understand what this G and N stuff is. Is it just faster speed with the N?
