I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home Version. My CD-ROM is not in MY COMPUTER folder. It is the HL-DT-ST cd-rw gce 8487B drive which shows in the Device Manager file as being corrupt.Nothing seems to work trying to re-install,update or roll back.Tried Googling it but no luck.I am not alone in my problem. Please help.Thank you.

I had this once as well with a new Toshiba laptop after I'd installed AnyDVD. It can also happen if you have an older version of Roxio's Easy CD Creator on your PC and you've just removed it. Your CD Rom or DVD drive just suddenly disappears. There's an easy fix that involves a few clicks in the registry. This is the only quick way to get it back that I know of. As you say, you find you're not the only one looking for a solution to this when you search the Internet. It seems to be a very common problem.
You have to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\Currentco ntrolset\ Control\Class\ then delete the upper and lower filters in the key {4D36E965-E325- 11CE-BFC1- 08002BE10318} . I remember I only found either the upper or lower filter but not both, but after deleting it, I opened My Computer and the DVD drive was back in place (big sigh of relief). I have to admit it hasn't been a permanent solution since the DVD drive still takes an unexpected vacation every now and again but after repeating the same deletion process, it resurfaces in My Computer and Windows Explorer. If anyone knows of a permanent solution for this, I'd be happy to hear it. I'd recommend backing up the registry before you delete the filters just to be safe. Or back up just the key itself - right click and Export.
The steps are well documented in the following two sites: http://support. microsoft. com/kb/314060 http://www.computin g.net/answers/ windows-xp/ xp-doesnt- detect-cd- drives/90345. html If the above doesn't help for some reason, you could try an XP fix from Doug Knox http://dougknox. com/ In the Win XP Fixes section, look on the right side - "Restore CD/DVD drives to Explorer".

Thank you for the information. Deleting the upper and lower filters worked. The computer could read the CD.I wanted to reload my OS,but without a CD-ROM,I couldn't do it.I wanted to transfer some files onto disk, but it wouldn't.I'm just glad to reboot from disk so I could reload my OS.I just got done and back on line.Great to have another fresh start.I have 5 years of updating to do so thank you again.
